Master Combat Class: Fighting for FilmSaturday • 1-4pm • Dec 11Denver Center Theatre Academy13th & Arapahoe, Denver, CO1 day • Dale Girard & Geoffrey Kent • $60This class explores the fundamental skills needed to sell an unarmed fight for the camera. Using a camera and playback system, students will be able to use the video medium to see how techniques are practically applied, what works, what doesn’t, and why. Looking specifically at unarmed sequences for film, this class explores not only the safe way of executing these techniques, but also how the full body is engaged to convincingly communicate the cause and effect of these techniques to the camera. The session will end with the development of a short choreographed routine using the techniques covered in class, which will be taped and played back for review.DALE GIRARDMr. Girard is an award winning Fight Director, professional Stunt Coordinator and author of the stage combat manual Actors On Guard. He is a second degree Black Belt in Taekwondo/Hopkido and Haidong Gumdo, a founding member of the North Carolina Stuntmen’s Association and one of only fourteen SAFD recognized Fight Masters. Recent film credits include “Eyeborgs,” “Pink Triangle", "The Trial", "The Key Man,” “Fall Down Dead” and the critically acclaimed “Junebug.” As a master teacher, Mr. Girard has instructed classes and seminars in stage combat, acting, and dramatic movement throughout North America. Based in North Carolina, he serves as Director of Stage Combat Studies for UNC School of the Arts.GEOFFREY KENTMr. Kent is the President of the Society of American Fight Directors and the resident Fight Director for the Denver Center Theatre Company and the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. Geoffrey also teaches stage combat for the National Theatre Conservatory and the University of Denver. News from DS-Casting
We will be adding to our website a VIDEO AUDIT which will clearly outline WHAT we do and HOW we do it. This video will feature some clips of the work that is being done by the students along with clear explanation by the coaches.
GOOD NEWS - It has been our policy to start every actor in the Monday Night Series, which has often been perceived as a "beginner course", which has discouraged the more advanced actor from attending. THAT HAS CHANGED - Actors who wish to enroll in any of our workshops can now schedule an audition (by appointment). Each actor will then be invited to join the appropriate level upon evaluation of their audition.
So, anyone who wants to take advantage of our FREE MONDAY AUDITS in December, should schedule AN APPOINTMENT ASAP

Intro to Film Acting Class at the Bug Theatre
--------------------------------------------------
This Saturday, we're holding the next Intro to Film Acting Class at the Bug Theatre. It's an intensive one-day workshop that gets actors to understand the first goal of film acting is to make an emotional connection to their scene partner. We use clips from some well-known movies to show how the pros do it. From there, we show how actors can surrender to their environment and finally connect to the words on the page. It's all part of showing actors the difference between film acting, acting in commercials, and acting on stage.

Interested in a writing class?
4 Week: What a Concept!
Cost:
$150.00
Description:
We all begin our stories with an idea; something that has caught our creative imagination and simply will not let go. That's the good news. The bad news? An idea alone does not a story make. This class will help you move from concept to story. What is the foundation of a good story? What do we need to accomplish before we are ready to actually sit down and write? The concept, or premise as some call it, is the place we begin. It is here we determine who our main character is and begin the process of fleshing out the journey they take in pursuit of the compelling reason the story is being told. If you don't take the time to prepare before you begin your journey, you shouldn’t be surprised if you get a half-baked idea trying to pass itself off as a story.
Whether you are writing a screenplay or a novel, are at the very beginning of the trail, or toward the end of the process and are unsatisfied with what you have, this class is a class for you. We will concentrate on developing the best character to tell your story, the central conflict, and the pathway forward, sharing and commenting on each other’s work in a supportive workshop atmosphere and using exercises from John Truby’sAnatomy of a Story to advance the work. By the end of the four weeks you will have a concept document that identifies a clear foundation on which to base your story and a vision forward into your screenplay or novel.
Upcoming Schedules:
- October 2010
Instructor: Michael Catlin
Starts: 11/16/2010
Time(s): 6:30 to 8:30 PM
Cost: $150.00 members / $185.00 non-members
Location: Humphries Poli Architects - Conference Room
2100 Downing Street, Denver, CO 80205

Student Film: The push
I've been looking for a good way to present student films to people . Would love feedback on this this idea, either e-mail me comments or critiques.
We are looking for 5 actors to star in our film Pushed. It's a military thriller that takes place in the cold war in which 2 men are in charge of pressing the kill switch that will launch nuclear war against the Soviets, and it's up to these two men to wrestle with the task of sending millions to their deaths, but the question remains; can they actually go through with it if told to? Here are the main characters.
Mouse: A handsome young captain in the marines who is kidnapped by the military and whose family is threatened into accepting the job of making sure the kill switch is pushed if ordered to. He's the main character, brave but vulnerable and willing to do anything if it keeps his family safe. Age: 20s to early 30s.
Church: a lifelong military man who takes pride in his job of being the man who can send the commies to hell. He feels deeply but hides it very well. He has the best character arc in the script and is the secondary main character with equal screen time to Mouse. Age: 40s.
Agent: He's the puppet master. The man who forced Mouse into this situation. The actor will be silhouetted, mysterious and needs a powerful voice to instill the dire situation that Mouse is in. A small but commanding part. preferable overweight age: Late 40s to 50s.
The Scientists: 2 doctors in charge of the sometimes sadistic medical experiments during the Cold war. Needs a good presence Male of female Ages: 30-40.
Our budget is changing and we are currently looking for grants and loans right now. We can't give you a definite budget but we are holding auditions at the Lobby of the Colorado Film School. Address: 9075 E Lowry Blvd, Bldg. 965 Denver, CO 80230. It takes place from 11 to 4 Friday the 15th. Walk ins welcome. You don't need preparation, we will audition actors based on ability to take direction, fearlessness and ability to get the depth of the character.
If you or any of the actors have any questions call me, Mark Higgins (Director and Co-writer) at (720) 308-0924. Or my Producer R. Mike Lyons at (719) 930-7150.
Thank you very much for your time and we will hope to make a great movie with you guys.
Looking for Slam Poets
SPECS-
2 Female:
1 in their early to mid 20’s (college age)
1 in her 40’s, youthful in energy up-to-date (but not hip/cool), feels like she fits in in a town like Ft. Collins, CO or Huntsville, Alabama
We want people with some experience in the slam/freestyle poetry/spoken word world, it’s not a stipulation, but if possible we would prefer these types of performers. We absolutely need to cast people who can take direction well, and we will need to ascertain this during the audition, so we should be open to casting non-union actor talent along with the available slam poets. We need to keep in mind that we’ll most likely have several takes of the scripted spots, in addition to some improvisational work, so the actor route is definitely one to consider. Some experience with improv is required, and definitely some experience with stage work is a plus. Let’s explore some of the improv theatre groups as well as the slam poets as that might offer us a good mix of trained actors who can improvise and be fluid.
Would like to get a good ethnic mix so would love to audition various ethnicities, we will need at least one of our final women to be Caucasian/non-Hispanic. We don’t want to be too urban or grungy. Erring on the side of neat casual is probably best. Dressed down could be a button down shirt or a neat t-shirt and jeans, but let’s steer away from anything too hip or hip hop.
Performance is going to be key, but we also need to ensure characters that our audience (those in B&C counties and our bankers) are going to relate to and represent the brand well. We are looking for approachable, man-on-the-street characters but must keep in mind that it’s their performance of the poetry that is really going to be key to how attention-grabbing the spots are.
We'll give them $1,000 per shoot day plus agency. That will cover all scripts and any versions.
